Committed to providing an energetic and entertaining show, which combines humour, strong lead singing, great harmonies, dynamic picking, and a tasteful mix of traditional bluegrass and original songs, this group will be an asset to any event. Silverbirch is destined to win the hearts of bluegrass fans everywhere. Gene Gouthro has been one of the premier mandolin players of Ontario for many years. He is a versatile musician, equally at home also with a fiddle or guitar. He sings lead, or any harmony part required, and is a talented songwriter. Tom McCreight, the Ol’ Coot, has been a fixture on the Ontario bluegrass scene for a great many years. A past winner of “entertainer of the year,” and “bass player of the year” awards, he anchors the group, writes some songs, and does most of the talking on stage. Tom has been leading Silverbirch since the early eighties, and is the sole remaining original member. Graham Stone’s driving, energetic banjo playing commands attention every time he leans into the microphone, and his back up work behind the vocals is exceptionally tasteful. Walter Bent has an extensive background of experience in bluegrass and other genres of music. He is a strong rhythm guitar player, a dynamic flatpicker, and equally competent on mandolin. He is a talented and forceful lead or harmony singer. Jan Hanko plays fiddle, and also does most of the tenor vocals. Jan brings a wealth of experience as a performer, vocalist and fiddler. His dynamic playing displays a definite “gypsy” influence and adds much excitement to the Silverbirch sound.
